Kreuzweg hits Berlin cinemas on March 13.
Kreuzweg got Berlinale Silver for screenplay. The camera work is more commendable however, reflecting the absolute rigour of family life lived according to the tenets of an ultra-conservative religious community (based closely on the Society of St. Pius X). In overwrought defiance of all adolescent yearnings, 14-year-old Maria prepares for the sacrament of confirmation by willing herself to ultimate sacrifice in an interesting stylistic exercise but one in which form threatens to eclipse content – and not always to the movie’s advantage.
Kreuzweg | Directed by Dietrich Brüggemann (Germany 2014) with Lea van Acken, Florian Stetter, Franziska Weisz. Starts March 13
