A young Beijing student is sent to work in Inner Mongolia during the Cultural Revolution. His growing obsession with wolves leads him to reflect upon the ecological balance on the prairie. From Jiang Rong’s autobiographical novel to Annaud’s cinematic adaptation, the story’s focus lies in the unsubtle dichotomy between wolves and sheep, as seen from the perspective of an outsider. Epic with an environmental message, this is ultimately not much more than an addition to Annaud’s back catalogue of animal films.
Wolf Totem | Directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud (China 2015) with Shaofeng Feng, Shawn Dou. Starts October 29
