Choreographer Angelin Preljocaj begins his adaptation of 1001 Nights with a wonderful group scene in an enchanting hamam. But the piece rapidly turns into an over-erotic-pseudo-Oriental mishmash. If you are afraid you’ll get bored by illustrative dance porn or offended by a completely clichéd interpretation of male-female relationships in the Middle East, rest assured: Preljocaj means it to be multicultural – Natacha Atlas sings the soundtrack – and feminist – apparently the half-naked humiliated dancers are quoting feministic texts that we can’t hear. Aha! Or maybe you’d prefer the traditional – and last-ever – Malakhov’s Gala: a bunch of hyper-talented soloists enjoying their favourite repertoire-pieces. Nothing new, but guaranteed wow-effect.
