Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel came at pop from a collectivist perspective, the 1990s label/lifestyle Elephant 6. There were no expectations that NMH would ever be more than an opening act for Apples in Stereo; when In the Aeroplane Over the Sea turned out to have a longer shelf life than his contemporaries in Limp Bizkit (who are back!) it frayed his final nerve and he disappeared into noise collage and the library. But Mangum has returned. Perhaps his self-excavation is an attempt to maintain his privacy while confronted with current realities. For the strongest way to make an impression these days is to disappear.
