Fête de la Musique 2011

Long celebrated as Berlin’s peaceful riot, institutional creep has infected the annual street music fest Fête de la Musique over the last couple of years, which isn’t to say that your day won’t be noisy if we plan it for you.

Long celebrated as Berlin’s most peaceful riot, institutional creep has infected the annual street music fest Fête de la Musique over the last couple of years, which isn’t to say that your day won’t be noisy if you plan it properly. Or if we plan it for you. History suggests there will be gazillions of guerilla acts, but, as far as we can tell, your best bets – official and otherwise – would be…

The outdoor punk BBQ @ Wild at Heart, well situated close to the primary action on Wiener Straße. Bands include Matt Voodoo, Cut My Skin and Al & The Black Cats. The Good, The Bands, The Bassy @ Bassy: 10 rootsy acts and more, including The Rob Ryan Roadshow and The Magnificent Brotherhood. Overworked one-man hip-hop posse Infinite Livez shows @ Centrum. The ooh-la-la open air @ Brel features Nico and Agit Pop’s Art of Noise and ends with the Gainsbourg Bar Ensemble. Keeping it retro, the pork pie acid of The Sir Henry Trio organizes @ Roter Salon. The intensely ethereal Silje Nes @ Die Frühperle. The Global Street Sounds of M.i.p.V., Canja Rave, The Greenbaums, and others @ Madame Sata. The sink-throwing Rupert’s Kitchen Orchestra @ Insel Berlin. Magnet club regulars of eclectic electro Finckobot, Tvyks, & Mike Genius (global bass) @ Galeries Lafayette. Or, just stay home with your Arcade Fire albums. Times will vary, but you’ll probably be too drunk to look at your watch, anyway.
