Poor tenant

Really??? To sum it up the guy walked away with a years free rent and 10000 euro in his pocket- definitely his rights were abused!! There is no other place in the world where the renter has to be paid out after sufficient notice in order to move from a place which doesn't belong to him! Especially after sufficient notice! The owner risks the cash they have invested and on the other hand renter risks nothing- he can just walk away! This is why you buy and not rent if you want stability! Get a grip.

and what about owners?

I have bought apartment 7 years ago and so far have been told that the rent has to stay same, by the company that i have to pay to run the property. The costs can go up though, resulting in me getting 140 euros per month, for which I can only rent something in places like Syria at this moment. Very just and fair, I guess.

Thanks for you comment. Property and neighbourhood porn? That's a little far-fetched. We never run advertorials and have had very very few real estate advertisers. Maybe three in the past 10 years. It is true that we have an inhouse rental agency, which merely helps foreigners find flats - at prices that are considerably lower than the competition. Fact is that there aren't enough affordable flats in Berlin. That's not our fault!

gentrification 101 courtesy of exberliner?

While it makes me happy to read this sort of thing from exberliner, it does seem a little hypocritical, don't you think, from a paper that has adverts and advertorials for real estate agents? After all, if you read the paper it's quite easy to see that there's also plenty of property and neighbourhood porn going on there. It's all very well to go about championing the tenants' cause, but how about you consider whether it's sensible to wax lyrical about how this and that neighbourhood is dead and it's time to move on to neighbourhood (a), (b) or (c), where everything is so much cooler and the rents are still cheap, when you have the sharks reading every word and ready to pounce on every opportunity! Why not just tell them straight away where to gentrify next and chuck out the old tenants?
