passive aggressive racism

Germans are profoundly racist and the worst part is that most of them do it in a passive aggressive, subtle way that lets you feeling stupid and more defenseless than a direct one would. That's exactly why you get paranoid in the end. It has been deeply traumatic when I studied in Germany as a young girl and it΄s still frustrating now on my second time here, even in cosmopolitan Berlin. Makes you feel something is wrong with you.

Ridiculous article

Sorry dear, your attempt to trivialize the issue of racism through humorous belittlement is little different from PRACTISING RACISM. Perhaps it is high time you admit that Germany is indeed one of the most racist society in the World. And has one of the least number of visible minority in Western Europe. (This means, including Greeks, Italians, Croatian, East European and even certain section of Turkish and Moroccan into your Institutions does not really count as racial openness. Because they are actually White, and once they learn your language, they do not stick out the way Africans, Asians or Indians do).
Germans rarely express any direct racial hatred because the culture is very repressed. But institutional racism is staggering. The rules are defined in a way that you get relegated to a second class / unwanted status by the "system" without any specific person's active involvement. That makes finger pointing rather tough.
Usually in every other country the school education is egalitarian and higher education system is meritocratic. But in Germany, it has been very shrewdly made opposite. On one hand by trifurcating the school system they have downgraded the immigrant kids to the lower grade "Hauptschule". That means, they are virtually precluded from high ranking jobs (Medicine, Law) at a very tender age of 10. And these classification is done using rather subjective assessment of primary school teachers. Without paying any heed to the fact that young children's reading comprehension and communication skills are strongly correlated to the background of their parents.
On the other hand, by considering all Universities equal, they have prevented competition from brain-drain immigrants and students from Emerging Worlds. And in the job market they are at clear disadvantage because they cannot use their academic credentials. This means even academically low achieving German students can use their looks, contacts, social skills and ethnic kinship to move ahead. ( Lets admit, the idea of beauty, elegance, charm and classiness are all ruthlessly Eurocentric). As opposed to USA, where an unttractive, "Fresh off the boat" Chinese or Indian guy from Stanford or MIT, always stands tall in comparison to a European guy from University of Kansas or Missouri, with blonde hair and chiselled features. All in all, Germans have kept the Job market extremely subjective and contact / reference oriented at the peril of immigrants.
Photos are mandatory on CV, which means Human Resources certainly engage in look-based assessment. (But pretending that they are immune to race-based notion of beauty). This means that there are scope for massive racial discrimination.

Dating German men - a no go

Dating German men has been one of the most horrible things I have ever done. Trying to find a decent one is like looking for the needle in a haystack. They look down on non-German women, especially Eastern Europeans, African, Indian. I regret I cannot delete from my mind their behavior and biases. Their hypocrisy is unbelievable, but amazingly enough there are black people who still think that they are fair...

racism in Germany

I really didn't write this to say that institutional racism doesn't exist. I think institutional racism exists and I also don't think institutions in Germany are particularly open to or inclusive of people with Turkish Migrationshintergrund etc. But I think the point I was making is that institutional racism leads to people being paranoid about race/reverse racism and that complaining about that is actually fairly racist.

I think it's fine to use humour to discuss racism, and like, no offence, I think if you could speak English as a native speaker you would've understood the point of the blog.

Agree with all the points you made, think it is outrageous you need to have a photo on your CV and also discriminates againts ugly ppl

Racism against white people

People say "But you're being racist against white people!" (Or Germans) with such relish, and I think they think it's because they think it's illogical to be against racism but be actually racist yourself, BUT the truth is it's because they think, deep-down, that anti-white racism is really unnatural & disgusting, because white people are the natural masters of the universe, i.e. it's just white supremacy talking.

Jacinta Nandi more than 4 years ago

There is no sadder sound

...than that of a German going out of his/her way to attempt to explain that he or she's not racist. It takes the tone of the wind right before a rainstorm (one that causes Germans to claim they're sick and stay home from work the next day).

racism

I find the bit about the golden skinny white boys at the lake just as racist as the bit about the pink lobstery old men. Because the pink lobstery old men is obviously just a joke, as anti-white racism is never like: "White people's skin is disgusting!" but always like "White people killed all the Indians." Whereas the naked skinny boys at the lake bit is just pervy.......I really don't think people actually read or understood this blog properly. I'm really not saying anything controversial. I say that the garlic theory is paranoid, but that racism paranoia is okay, well, that the best cure for racism paranoia is, like, you know, a dialogue. What I really don't believe is that racism paranoia CAUSES racism. Coz, like I said, everyone has different ideas about what's racist. There are ppl who will argue till they're blue in the face that blacking up isn't racist. I wrote another comment but it got deleted? A friend of mine blacked up and some people wrote that it was racist and another friend defended him & said: "When people don't give a shit about asylum seekers' hostels burning down, you only have yourselves to blame." Now, most Anglo-Saxons are clear that blacking up is about the most racist thing you can do without, like, resorting to violence. So I just think we're ALLOWED to discuss this sort of thing. Like, we're allowed to say is it racist to not eat garlic? Coz some people think it's not racist to use the term Neger or paki or segregate schoolkids. So we're allowed to have a discussion. Also, I just don't think being called racist is as bad as actual racism. Yous are all calling me racist for this blogpost & it's about 1% as hurtful as actual racism. Okay, maybe 3%.

Racism is not about race

... but about maintaining power over people in weaker positions in society. That's the point of this blog. You people saying the thing about fat white men is "just as racist" are being extremely obtuse.

pure disgust

well this was disgusting to read. im white and come from a country with one of the least ethnic diversities in the world so in principle i have never experienced racism just because there no one whom it could be directed to. when I came here I all of a sudden had this feeling of being constantly attacked and harassed about concepts I have actually no ability to empathize just because im white. and that comment about fat old german men… how incredibly ageist and sexist is that. thanks god my parents weren’t like that and thought me respect for any person not even having racism around.

How about...

*you people/folks - instead of 'you guys'? Also, there isn't a SINGLE bloody bottle below 9 quid at neither Tesco's nor Sainsbury's that doesn't make your face contort like a raisin. Can't be all that bad other there... ;)

Hmmnnn

I'm not actually sure if it's true to say that only whites can be racist. I think non-whites can have a pretty good go. That was the point of the blog. But I think it's good for the concept of racism being a part of sytematic oppression to be introduced to German society.

General Stereo

It is extremely important to distinguish: On the one hand you have a large group that defines whats normal and right and whos habitus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Habitus_(sociology)) is therefore normal and right and not up for discussion. If this group stereotypes a smaller and marginalized group (in a positive or a negative way) then that's a totally different thing than the marginalized group stereotyping the dominant group.
It's still stereotyping though. You might call one "racist" and the other "stupid stereotyping". I suppose you could just as well call both "racism" - the core point is that it has to be understood that there is a massive difference. And critisizing language is always a really good way of getting this done. Therefore i'm agreeing: Only whites can be racist!!! ;)

Racism towards white people and/or Germans

is like sexism towards men. It exists. But it doesn't count.

Jacinta Nandi more than 4 years ago

oh boy

Thanks to Andrew for the definition. Thanks to Stato for saying not to FUCKING generalize stuff
I just want to say, I am German, I love garlic and some people in our country, like myself, we dont think in boxes we dont think, these people have this and that and those people have this and that. To me at least, I look at a person, I think hm weirdo, doesnt eat garlic no matter where he/she s from, There are nice and not so nice people and thats about it. Just drop this shit and carry on.

Racism

... I think its time to admit that Germans are just not totally clear on what race or racism is. The other day I was talking to a my friend about power relations and the concept of how you can't really be racist against white people and he was like, "well Hitler was racist against the Jews, and they are white for the most part." And I pointed out that we have a whole other word for that, anti-semitism. And he was like, "Jah, and what's more racist than anti-semitism?"

Garlic Theory - Field Evidence

Not too long ago I was chatting very happily with a (german) guy on a/the big gay online dating site, and we scheduled a date and I was all ''oh finally, hitting on a german guy and it's not like bashing my head against a wall!". Then shortly before we were supposed to meet up for the kennenlernenbier, he asked "nicely" if I could make sure not to eat anything with garlic in the day we were to meet, because he 'kommt damit überhaupt nicht klar.' Not even making this shit up.

Needless to say, there was no date.

White germans

"fat, pink, lobstery things"??? Not nice, Jacinta. If that's not rascist (and age-ist and size-ist), then what is?

Ugh

and fat hairy dark men with boobs and moustache in saunas are a pleasant sight, right? so hypocritical and one-sided!
just stop thinking about races, and stop fucking generalizing stuff...

"Racism is the systematic oppression of non-white people by white people"

Not in the least. Racism is antagonism or prejudice towards other races. ALL races, including white people.

Andrew Smith more than 4 years ago

Racism hasn't got any colour...

Yes, that's actually all I can say to this...
If you think of the xenophobic violence in Africa for example (or don't you hear about that in Germany?)
And the garlic story was so 'random'...
Sorry, but you couldn't "get" me with this blog at all...
