This language is horrible...

Yo, I am really disgusted by the language you're using.
I'm a 'Kraut' (living in an English speaking country) and I've never heard or read bad language like that before.
...even though I've worked on a construction site for a while...
But never mind, I'm just gonna stay out of your blog - because I am free to do so ;-)
Take care!

I Had to Say

I really liked this, and couldn't agree more. It's fitting for a country where the people seem to always be telling you how it is, usually while being condescending and often with conviction.

Freedom in USA -really??

Freedom is relative. Maybe the grass looks greener on the other side. In US, big bro is always breathing down your neck. They monitor what you write and talk. You are hauled away from the the main queue at all american airports if your name has a "Khan" in it or is a muslim name ( yes the president of largest democracy in the world - India was hauled up a few times for extra check because his name happened to be Dr.Abdul Kalam ). If not Uncle Sam then the bankers are chasing you. So which kind of freedom are we talking of here in US. Is Jacinta aware of the "freedom" for residents after hurricane Katrina or after 3 mile island nuclear disaster or the radio active mess from Fukushima in california.

@Pieter

Wondering if you've ever, by chance, referred to "The Americans" in a general fashion.

Poverty in Britain + Racism in Germany = Freedom

The difference is that Germans feel their freedom is infringed when they verbally harass Turks for head scaffs. The Brif would frick out if you tell them it is not ok to harrass a poor person for watching a bit of telly

Fat?

There are Way more fat People in America! Dont call me fat

Chachacha more than 4 years ago

no one is free

Germans think they are free, but they don't even have the personal freedom that allows them to SMILE. They are trapped by a serious attitude, as if anything really matters.
I have lots of really great German friends, but if I want to really have fun I have to hang out with non-Germans (or Germans that have spent years living in other countries)
Freedom isn't about being naked in the sauna (in fact, I have a friend who was shouted at for entering a sauna in swimming trunks! Enforced nakedness is NOT freedom) it's about being open to all ideas.
Which probably means no one is really free, because all people have things they're not open to.
So there you go - none of us are free! And all the Germans here arguing that they have more freedom than others are just proving that they're not free, by not being free to accept the idea they might not be as free as they think.
And now I need to set myself free of the internet and go outside. Tchussie!

Dave the Chimp more than 4 years ago

I wonder

if any of us are really free? and obviously we (Germans/Brits/Americans) are freer than people in China or Iran. Although a lot of ppl in China say they are not as unfree as the press over here states, I know a lot of Chinese people complain about press representation of China....I think the NSA is a huge issue, like a huge fucking issue and the harrassment of Glenn Greenwald's partner is majorly stasimäßig anfI always felt beofe that it was disrespectufl to Stasi-Opfer to be all like, england is basically a Stasified state but after the Greenwald thing I really think that is the direction they're heading in....

Jacinta more than 4 years ago

what about?

I think everyone thinks I think America is freer than Germany or Germany is freer than Britain, I don't, it's pretty much swings & roundabouts really. Autobahn - no speed limit - frrrrrrreedom. Ausweispflicht - less freedom. The whole Ausbildung thing. It's pretty much swings & roundabouts as far as I can see, though we do have a chilled out life in Berlin compared to other places on Earth. But we're not free. We're all fucking angemeldet.

Jacinta Nandi more than 4 years ago

angemeldet

What's unfree about being angemeldet? Actually the Datenschutz at the Bezirksamt is far stricter than in British/US authorities. Ever heard of the NSA/GCHQ?????

Maurice T Frank more than 4 years ago

freedom

I am not saying England or America are freer. But being angemeldet is patently unfree. I go to an office with a Mietvertrag and then I get a bit of paper saying where I live and then the cops know where I live? And you can't be a member of a Videothek without that Anmeldebestätigung. I went out with a boy who was jut geduldet once and I had to go with him whenever he wanted to rent a video. I am not saying not being angemeldet is freer - dafür wird man in England ständig bei CCTV gefilmt. But it's still not free. Even the Pfand on the bottles isn't "free." We're not free. I personally think that's fine, to be honest. I think freedom is overrated. I would ban torture porn & stuff, I'm totally non-Pirate in that way

Jacinta Nandi more than 4 years ago

na

so giving your credit details to the videothek, as you would have to in the UK, makes your more free? Nope.

Mtf more than 4 years ago

I am not saying England is freer

I am not saying England is freer, it's not like a Freedom-O-Mat. It is patently true that we do not go to the Meldeamt and anmelden out of freedom. We do it coz if we don't, we will get fined. Nobody ever arrived in Germany and went "Oh, I really feel like going & informing the police where I live." We do it because we have to. And I do actually think it iseasier for asylum seekers to joing a Videothek in England, though I don't know. but the point I am making is that these things are all random and that freedom is an illusion.

Jacinta Nandi more than 4 years ago

Freedom

I like your rant, Jacinta, but totally disagree. I Germany I feel more free from state harrassment, more free from economic pressure, more free to do what I like.

Maurice T Frank more than 4 years ago

Really, totally

fucking fab!

Sarah Berning more than 4 years ago

Best one

This is one of the best blogs Amok has ever done, and it's not anti-German at all. It makes a really basic point that people often, in fact almost always, overlook - that freedoms are always based on cultural conditioning. Different countries just choose different freedoms. The US is no freer than Germany or vice versa, but people in both countries feel they are freer than those living in the other, for the above reasons.

Read Something Else If This is Too Much For You...

@Jacinta, I believe some commenters read into this article all wrong. I think you did a great job at stating the facts and staying true to both your own writing culture, as well as the creative writing culture. The reason why so many non-Germans and alternatively-minded Germans read THIS periodical and site, is indeed for various insights, and not just mainstream ones. These articles challenge the ideas and ideologies of the same exact people that truly could care less about freedom(s). Again, unless it then pertains to the threatening of their own! (wink) As with any nation, (when you live in that given nation, immigrant or not), "their" news is usually one-sided. It does not necessarily mean that you want to exile yourself from the country. It simply means you are aware and open to making some statements. Statements that can actually initiate change or have other unknown consequences. Regardless, this is a part of our liberty as citizens of the Western fabric. Yes, I agree, as yourself, that Germans have a more ideal societal set-up in this Western fabric (for now) however, it does NOT give them the right to talk about every other nation as if they are third-worlds or aliens, which a good majority of Germans do soooo much!! The fact that so many Germans are passive about it (when compare to the U.S. or France, even, attests to your point that freedoms are NOT given a fuck about to them unless they are being deprived of their own fun.) Write on, Sista!

@irina

this is not journalism like news journalism, it's a column.

Pupsnase more than 4 years ago

Well, Irina and Pieter..

that's because you can't take what DIE BRITEN say all that seriously, ever! Like, up to 45% of Empire can be explained as a big satirical misunderstanding. So, honestly, don't hold a magazine piece to the standards of an academic anthropological study.

Germans Make Great Cars

Of course we are allowed to talk about Germans as one group. Italians like to have fun, Brits are often too polite, Americans drive big cars. It is only when someone doesn't like the comments it becomes an issue. I hope that most people in this world realize that when we talk about Germans, or Japanese etc.we are talking about cultutal customs and not individual people. If we want a free world, then we need to keep our freedom of speech. This world is getting crazy and I can se us in the near future getting dragged through a court for farting less that 5 meters away from someone! No, we should not have the right to abuse individual people, but one of the most amazing things on our planet is culture. Let us talk about it in an open way to keep it interesting. I hope I don't need to get this comment checked by my lawyer, doctor, or pimp, and have to get it signed by a police officer before I post it!

Bob more than 4 years ago

Hung Lo

Hung Lo, if you get so upset by reading comments, then don't read them. (it makes you use '!' and cry)

Pieter more than 4 years ago

Freedom

Freedom to write.... Freedom to read. You don't like it, well don't read it then, stop crying, go home and invent a rule like... You are not allowed to look at other peoples dogs on the subway!

Hung Lo more than 4 years ago

That's because.....

we like black & Jewish people. JOKE

Jacinta more than 4 years ago

germans

What is it with Exberliner that it's allowed to talk about 'Germans' as if they were one group. Exberliner wouldn't easily let their writers talk about 'Jews' or 'Blacks'. 'Germans don't care about bla bla bla'.
pff (I'm a Dutchman)

Pieter more than 4 years ago

Well..

After reading this monologue I am only wondering, why the author still lives in this country where nobody really cares about freedom, surrounded by fat, greedy pigs. I mean, these emotional, pointless insults - is his what journalism is turning to these days?

Irina more than 4 years ago

Bla-bla...

Reminds me of the shit I got in the UK for taking the piss out of their joke of a government and their violent youth (c.f. recent riots) - "leave, if you don't like it here". Well, shit: it is the prerogative and privilege of the immigrant to hold up the mirror to a narcissistic host-nation, and they better listen.

Mike more than 4 years ago

Couldn't agree more

Anything that teaches Germans that it's possible to nourish yourself without meat is a great thing. German sausages are stinking awful anyway. Pretty sure every other country in the world that makes sausages does a better job of it.

Stephen more than 4 years ago

sausages

Stephen, you're so, so wrong. Having done extensive research, I can confidently say noone does sausages better than the Deutsch.

Samanta more than 4 years ago

Bangers...

Dude. Never had greasy/watery bangers and mash before, ey? Give it a go. You'll be back on the ol' Bratwurst in no time.
