hipster fashion is the perfect disguise for anyone

C'mon hipster fashion is the perfect disguise for any one... you will blend in with the herd... if some one says "did you see that person with a beard, vintage glasses and tattoos around here?" it could refer to thousands of people... and lets face it when people try to disguise themselves in cartoons they take on pretty much the same appearance... even that plain clothes cop that was kneeling on that poor persons head outside Görli park in the video that spread around the world had figured how best to blend into the surroundings... so its no surprise the Nazis wanting to penetrate areas they would otherwise not be welcomed adopt it too... some of the haircuts have a kind of thirties vibe to them anyway which I am sure they love....

Hipster Nazis are so "yesterday"..

Talking about "hipster nazis" ..try goggl'ing Ourania Miaxaloliakou, the daughter of Nikos Miaxaloliakos, leader of the greek nazi party- Golden Dawn. He was the first greek politician to perform the Gangnam Style just before going to prison : http://www.koolnews.gr/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/psy-mixaloliakos.jpg . For Ourania "hipstering" is so yesterday : http://www.videotex.gr/uploads/2013/10/newego_LARGE_t_1101_54254759.jpg (the day her daddy got arrested). Since Golden Dawn has been a role model for all far right movements in Europe at the moment.. be prepared! We are all about to witness nazi demonstrations by Rapunzel, the Beauty and the Beast, Ariel , Bambi, Dambo , all of the 7 dwarfs, probably Superman and Spiderman, and why not Thundercats and He-Man : http://www.koolnews.gr/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/ourania-xionati.jpg

Revisonism

Because of what Skinhead culture later became associated with, there's been a tendency amongst Left-leaning "yoof culture" journalists to over-emphasis the multicultural roots of Skinheads. Skinheads were basically Mods, with a distinctive look that was inspired by the American Ivy League. This went on to influence the Jamaican Rude Boy - not the other way around. That's right, Skinheads, or Hard Mod styling, preceded the Rude Boy. So all this about how they shaved their heads to look like Jamacians is just revisionist nonsense. They did love Reggae, but that came in the late '60s, well after the movement had been fully formed for a number of years.

Hipsters?

I get your point(I think??). Nazis dont look like Nazis anymore(however a Nazi is supposed to look like?).

But am I the only one objecting against these people looking like hipsters. Just a bunch of tacky dressing dudes with extremely ugly sunglasses and what German would find a "humorous" tote bag.

black

all I see here are people wearing the only clothing-colour allowed in Berlin - BLACK!
Nazi's had style back in the day. Now they're just a bunch of slobs. If you're going to go around acting like you're superior to others, at least dress like you're superior.
losers

I just looked down at my clothes. Black. Ill-fitting. Shit, I've been in Berlin too long...

completely missing the point

all i see is a photo of people displaying 'modern' fashion and acompanied by a bunch of tacky puns made in poor taste and with rather bad timing.

this makes two obvious points that you might want to consider next time you go judging books by their covers:

1) people who dress similarly, might (GASP!) think or act differently.
2) nazi's or nationalist attitudes are tolerated in germany and if apparently spreading here as much as any other european country where migrants are being once again blamed for societies problems.

perhaps instead you could ask: "what if these are just normal non-nazi PEOPLE?" it may be hard for self-righteous english speaking ex-pats, but try to learn from the majority of german people who accept responsibility for their mistakes; whether it's bad fashion or more serious historical f-ups. instead of pointing the finger and blaming others, try looking in the mirror and questioning how we are so ready to repeat our past mistakes.

oh and incidentally: if these guys WERE actually trying to do some good by infiltrating a nazi rally, you just totally pointed them out for future victimisation. GREAT JOB!

Why are you covering this?

In light of Holocaust Commemoration Day on Jan 27, why on earth are you covering news on neo-Nazi culture in such a facetious way? Using hashtags to talk about #FascismWeek and "Hipster Hitler" strikes me as particularly distasteful -- and frankly, quite insulting to descendants of Holocaust survivors living in Berlin, such as myself. I'm disappointed, ExBerliner.

I'm a descendant of Holocaust survivors

and not offended at all. Linda, please do not attempt to speak for me.

Me, too

I respect your p.o.v., Linda, but agree with Harry. The writer - in too brief a space, unfortunately, - has made a great point about the overlap of extreme oppression and trendiness/fashion.

Skinheads

Uhm, no-one's claiming that early skinhead subculture was free from racism -- it's, however, important to mention that the subculture itself was at the very least apolitical, but considering its origin, it was quite anti-racist by nature as a whole, before the look and style was appropriated by the neo-nazi movement. They tend to do that, those nazis, can't let the rest of us have nice things, like the swastika that they've sullied in the west permanently, even though it's originally one of the most benign symbols there are.

influence

Just because they listened to Jamaican music or wore Jewish icons does not indicate that they where free from rascism , Jamaica is full of prejudism, so freeking naive to think that because they listened to black folks singing or wore jewish icons the skinheads where sort of dancing hippys free of charge from feelings of anger towards races or any kind of specific outlet of emotion to any spesific target, Jeez come one. why are you so narrow and give yourself this weird impression of defining evil and putting it on boxes, labeling , narrowing arggghhhh people! The most repugnant creatures on the planet..

Wow. Two things I can't stand. Non-conformist conformists and Neo-Nazis combined together to make a hybrid of stupid. Hitler was certainly gassing the wrong people...

Remember Hamburg!

In Magdeburg, 3,300 police cleared the street – injuring dozens of people with batons and pepper spray – in order to guarantee the Nazis’ right to demonstrate. Compare this to Hamburg one month earlier, where the police stopped a left-wing demonstration of 7,000 after just a few meters! I don't think it's a stretch to say that German police are more hostile towards left-wing causes.

Skins - from a person who met some

Dude, if, like me, you grew up in London in the 1970s and '80s, you would have seen every day that that Shane Meadows movie vision of the majority of skinheads as peace-loving black-culture fiends is self-serving, dishonest rubbish. Glue in carrier bags, yes. DMs, yes. Spitting at Bengalis, yes. A few might have been right-on progressives who loved nonwhite culture, but very many we saw every day in inner-city London were anything but. Meadows' and modern skins' deluded romanticisation of that past probably helps contribute to bizarre contemporary phenomena such as the incident you outline.

Liked the article a lot though.

Wikipedia lies!

There is a very left-wing skinhead movement today, for example the Red and Anarchist Skinheads (RASH). My impression is that most Nazis, in contrast, have given up on the skinhead look.

As for London in the 1970s, I had to rely on Wikipedia: "Named for their close-cropped or shaven heads, the first skinheads were greatly influenced by West Indian (specifically Jamaican) rude boys and British mods, in terms of fashion, music and lifestyle. Originally, the skinhead subculture was mainly based on those elements, not politics or race, in fact many British Skinheads during the 1960s were Black." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skinhead)

John Riceburg more than 3 years ago

Wikipedia tells the truth.

No, Wikipedia is right: skin and suede heads were not necessarily racist in the Sixties. It was in the early Seventies when everything took a turn rightward, under the glare of Mosley. Still, what is a journalist doing using Wikipedia as his reference material?
