Jonesing for a good plate of fried eggs with your coffee, instead of rolls with rubbery cheese adorned with starfruit? Despair not: The California Breakfast Slam was squatting 7000 (7tsd) in Kreuzberg every Saturday and Sunday is still here to quench that craving. With 7000 recently gone, they've relocated to Lagari on Pflügerstrasse. Here you will find the closest thing to a ‘real American breakfast’ this side of the Rhine.
For the minimal-minded, a Two Eggs Plate (€7.50) is the way to go: two bio eggs any style, Texas-style turkey sausage patty or bacon, zucchini-potato hash browns, white or wheat toast and a few pancakes. Not really that Californian but it hits the spot.
Black Bean Huevos Rancheros (€7.90), another regular feature of the menu, is pretty West Coast. These huevos are served with black beans, salsa (not enough), spicy guacamole (just the right amount of garlic, cumin, Tabasco and lemon to turn insipid Berlin avocados into a delish mixture), cheese, and two fried homemade corn tortillas with an almost pancake-style consistency – think thick and delicious.
Finally we gorged on Eggs of Pope Benedict (€8.50): two poached eggs on a slab of Kasseler (the Pope Benedict part?) with hollandaise sauce and green asparagus piled on an English muffin.
This is no health food, in a good way (i.e. fear the cholesterol but not the dioxin; eggs here are organic). All the XL combos are truly packed with intense flavours, as only Americans can concoct. Hungover Kreuzköllners rejoice!
