Theater

For years the Hebbel am Ufer theaters in Kreuzberg have offered the best, most experimental international programme the city has to offer in a bold blend of contemporary dance and multimedia performances. HAU was named German theater of the year in 2004, the year after Volksbühne veteran Matthias Lilienthal came to the helm, making it the only Berlin theater to earn the distinction on its own since 1998. HAU hosts local groups, like Theatertreffen-invitees She She Pop. It’s also shown and co-produced the works of daring international companies from Japanese Toshiki Okada’s chelfitsch to New York’s Caden Manson’s Big Art Group. The theater also brought two new festivals to Berlin, the indie fest, 100 Berlin, and the Context dance festival.
