In a Torstraße basement, only a few metres away from the Soho House, where the well-heeled jetset sips €10 cocktails, Günter and Reno Jünemann make handmade Pantoffeln – a family tradition since 1908 when Günter’s grandfather Bernhard opened their first slipper shop in Magdeburg.
His son Otto moved the business to Prenzlauer Allee in 1927, and the shop landed in its current location in 1981. Each day the father-son team produces some 80 pairs, the most popular of which is the ‘godfather of Pantoffeln’, the classic orange checked model.
Yet with 18 different colors and patterns, there’s something for everyone. Prices vary according to model and size (‘regular’ sizes are 36- 46; sizes range as high as 52 for XXL feet), but the standard is an affordable €12.
