The Archers, aka English writing-directing -producing team Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, formed a rare duo in the history of filmmaking, working together during the 1940s and 1950s on more than 15 films.
Their movies are remembered for their visually breathtaking cinematography and realistic storylines.
Arsenal is showing 10 of their joint ventures this month. Pressburger considered 1943's The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Apr 7, 19:30, Apr 22, 19:00) their best.
At the time of the film's release during World War II, it was frowned upon for sympathetically portraying a German officer.
In 2011, it was re-released in full-length splendour with the help of, amongst others, long-time fan Martin Scorsese.
The Red Shoes (1949, photo) is a story about a ballet dancer, inspired by a Hans Christian Andersen fairytale and hailed for its use of Technicolor galore (Apr 6, 20:00, Apr 14, 21:00).
