One thing’s for sure: Video Collection in Prenzlauer Berg won’t win many hearts by its appearance. From the outside, it looks like a generic 1980s-style rental shop and the inside setup is sterile and un-inviting. So the reason for the shop’s 500 regular customers must lie elsewhere. The first hint is a shelf with the 100 most important directors, according to in-house opinion, from Allen to Zulawski: a nice beginner’s guide to the big screen legends.

And although browsing through a semi-chaos of 10,000 different titles (sorted by geography, director and theme) can be daunting, the widely knowledgeable staff is more than willing to help in a refreshingly un-patronizing way. DVDs are €1.50 per business day (€1 within the last half hour before closing) and there’s a three-for-two special. Furthermore, the titles from the rotating ‘theme’ shelf are €1 per day.
