Strapped for cash? There’s no need to skip movie night! The Amerika-Gedenkbibliothek offers a selection of around 50,000 international films (half DVDs, half VHS) in 40 languages. Registration is €10, but there’s a reduced €5 fee for university students, and it’s free for kids under 16. You shouldn’t expect the latest Hollywood blockbusters, but there’s a wide variety of classics as well as a healthy 13,000 documentaries and 7,000 titles in the children’s library.

And there’s no stress, since the rental period is four weeks. You’ll find many of the films in OV – but don’t expect English subtitles on the VHS tapes. Knowing what you want is clearly an advantage here, as you shouldn’t expect the staff to be strictly flicks freaks.
