On view December 2-30 a collection of films from Polish director Andrzej Wajda, one of the few living giants of European postwar cinema, including the Palme d'Or winner, Man of Iron. Giovanni Marchini Camia

With a career spanning over six decades and nearly 40 films, a Palme d’Or, and an honorary Oscar to his name, Polish director Andrzej Wajda is one of the few living giants of European postwar cinema.

    His films predominantly deal with Polish cultural memory, mediated through the eyes of his protagonists, characteristically tragic-hero figures caught up in the maelstrom of history.

    Throughout December, Arsenal and other participating cinemas are offering a full retrospective with many screenings accompanied by discussion with long-time Wajda actors, collaborators and experts.

    His Palme d’Or winner, Man of Iron (Dec 11, 19:30, Polish with English subs, with lead actor present), chronicles the beginnings of the Solidarity labour movement with remarkable candour in its criticism of the Communist regime.
