Do you like this?

Disney and Pixar go (t)wee and somewhat unoriginally Braveheart in this story of highland princess Merida (Macdonald), forced to confront her dignified queen-mum (Thompson) as she liberates herself from duty and tradition in favour of some spirited action with a bow and arrow. The voices are the best part of this summer crowd pleaser, above all Connolly’s, whose gleeful gusto as the rabble-rousing king checks the film’s attempts at over-literal transformative sentimentality. Make sure you see it in English.

Brave (Merida – Legende der Highlands) | Directed by Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman (USA 2012), animation with Kelly Macdonald, Billy Connolly, Emma Thompson. Starts August 2
