It’s not often that a documentary displaces a feature film on the same subject. The stunningly filmed story of Buck Brannaman, the man behind The Horse Whisperer deserves to do just this and hopefully will. Redford pops up briefly to comment on the way Brannaman’s charisma insinuated itself into his film but is barely a footnote in this mesmerising look at a man who survived an abusive childhood and now travels the US mediating between horse owners and the animals onto which they all too often project unexplored longings and insecurities.
