Do you like this?

A filmic exposition of China's economic surge, this movie explores the concept of venture capitalism, as remote villages, quiet fields and industrious locals lose ground to land-grabbing party vultures intent on making the most of a supposed UFO sighting. The film echoes Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky's interest in water as a force for mediating between different states of being, providing a perfect foil to the shrill tones of Chinese party propaganda in an intensely and unexpectedly poetic vision of environmental depredation, human folly and mute resistance.
