Poet uses six case studies to explore the wide-eyed dreams of social dropouts and alternative visionaries, commune-hopping between Molotov-blitzed Copenhagen, an outback Australian micro-state and Sealand, a floating defence port with its own currency and passport stamps. Even more amusing than self-proclaimed princes evading tax are the tree-dwelling Damanhurians or the oiledup orgies of ZEGG, a “golden years” sexual awakening camp just beyond Potsdam. Poet’s foray into these variations on utopian fantasy is marred by patchy technical execution and an insistence on neutrality but entertains nonetheless.
