Do you like this?

Just like the GDR's shortage of gay films (the only one, Coming Out, premiered the day the Wall fell), the lack of documentaries on the subject is astounding. Rösener and Stein could easily have taken a direct, historical approach. Instead, they've collected from very personal and diverse subjects – from city to Dorf, young(ish) to old – to tell their stories. The result is a broad pictures of men, not just plainly recognisable victims.

Unter Männern Schwul in der DDR | Directed by Ringo Rösener, Markus Stein (Germany 2011). Starts April 26
