Written by Cristian Mungiu (Palme d’Or winner for 4 months, 3 weeks and 2 Days), Periferic examines facets of a life lived on Romanian society’s outskirts as Matilda (Ularu) uses 24 hours of furlough from prison to try and salvage her own life and that of her young son. Ularu’s rendition of desperation paired against all the odds with dogged hope is a thing of splendour, taking this movie beyond good social realism into the dark realms of the grimly sublime.
