Based on the 1912 French novel by Louis Pergaud, Guerre des Boutons revives the story of war and friendship between two gangs of boys in rural France. Unfortunately, Barratier broke Pergaud’s canny portrayal of the irrationality of war by going painfully trite, attaching the story to a WWII narrative. Decent acting and warm, romantic aesthetics carry the film, but it panders to weak-minded, force-feeding themes rather than encouraging psychological analysis.

La Guerre des Boutons (Krieg der Knöpfe) | Directed by Christophe Barratier (France 2011) with Laetitia Casta, Marie Bunel, Guillaume Cane. Starts April 12
