Do you like this?

Shot entirely from the perspective of a group of tank operators, Lebanon makes its audience as isolated, claustrophobic and uninformed as the soldiers, as we are shown urban warfare (dismembered bodies, homes destroyed with white phosphorous, a woman stripping off her burning dress) through the tank’s viewfinder. Based on Maoz’ personal experience, Lebanon captures the horror of war, and its portrait of the young soldiers’ psyche is as precise as the film’s meticulous cinematography.

LEBANON | Directed by Samuel Maoz (Israel et al. 2009) with Yoav Donat, Itay Tiran, Oshri Cohen. Starts October 14.
