Do you like this?

This movie succeeds well enough in presenting Monroe (Williams), beset by insecurities, making a film opposite sardonic thespian Laurence Olivier (Branagh), and allowing herself to be comforted by a young assistant director (Redmayne). But it jeopardises a good idea by taking on board too many extras. Lightness succumbs to overcrowding, as secondary characters played by Judi Dench, Derek Jacobi, Emma Watson and Julia Ormond jostle for attention. Less would have been more.

My Week With Marilyn | Directed by Simon Curtis (UK/ USA 2011) with Michelle Williams, Eddie Redmayne, Kenneth Branagh. Starts April 19
