Do you like this?

In Lone Scherfig’s One Day, Spall plays an unpopular character, Emma’s (Hathaway) rebound man when the one she’s really destined for, university buddy Dexter (Sturgess) appears simply too unreliable as a partner for life. The film is hampered by its original material, a bestselling romance, and never quite manages to make you forget its simplistic underlying psychology. But its elaborate production design, as Emma and Dexter’s story is told over 20 years, is enough to make anyone of the right age nostalgic, and Scherfig’s version of bittersweet is as tasty as caramel and sea salt.

One Day (Zwei an einem Tag) | Directed by Lone Scherfig, with Anne Hathaway, Jim Sturgess (USA 2011). Opens November 3
