Do you like this?

Sparkle? This is more like dust. Salim Akil tells the clichéd story of a shy, church girl in 1960s Detroit (Sparks) and her quest to become ‘a star!’ Obviously fame doesn’t come easy for her due to a dysfunctional family and, predictably, stage fright. A disappointing Motown-inspired soundtrack makes it doubtful you’ll sing along. However, redemption turns up trumps in the final performance as the late Whitney Houston takes the stage, stealing the show and every bit of sparkle in it.

Sparkle | Directed by Salim Akil (USA 2012) with Jordin Sparks, Whitney Houston, Carmen Ejogo, Derek Luke. Starts October 11
