What appears initially as another attempt at rehashing material that proved successful the first time round, The Expendables 2 actually manages to build on the strengths that made the first movie a hit. No plot surprises (the bloody revenge of a simple job gone wrong), but well thought-out action sequences performed tongue-in-cheek with ironically flexed muscles by a star-studded cast combine to create a film that works, albeit without great ambition, both on its own terms and as a parody of the tried and tested action genre.
