Do you like this?

Author Michael Morpurgo’s story of Joey, the horse who travels from emerald Ireland to the battlefields of WWI and back, is moving stuff and well suited to Spielberg’s determined enactment of happy endings. The narrative scope and its range of characters could flummox a director with less experience (and funding), but Spielberg just about brings off this Oscar-nominated panoply of harrowing war scenes interspersed with human-interest episodes from all sides of the fray.

War Horse | Directed by Steven Spielberg (USA 2011) with Jeremy Irvine, Emily Watson and a cast of thousands. Starts February 16
