Do you like this?

This long overdue first film documentary on Jim Morrison consists of 90 minutes of impressive original footage.

It’s a no-brainer for fans, but When You’re Strange is condemned to rely solely on Depp’s lofty voiceover, which fails to move beyond the usual 1960s mantras and provide any real insight. Only those who know nothing about the band and its time – or hardcore devotees – have anything to gain here.

WHEN YOU’RE STRANGE: A FILM ABOUT THE DOORS | Directed by Tom Dicillo (USA 2009). Starring Jim Morrison and Johnny Depp (narration). Opens in Berlin cinemas July 11.
