Like a phoenix, Zukunft literally rose from the ashes: its predecessor, techno club MFE, burned down in 2009. Two years later, the owners of Friedrichshain indie cinema Tilsiter Lichtspiele re-envisioned the sprawling indoor/outdoor site as an ambitious ‘ranch’ that would offer a medley of cultural activities.
Now run as a motley collective, Zukunft contains multitudes. Depending on the night and your fancy, there’s art house cinema in OV at indoor Kino Zukunft (€4.90) or open-air Freiluftkino Pompeji (€5); live jazz and flamenco at the Jazzbar; noise rock at Keller club Tiefgrund; the occasional outdoor concert in the tree-canopied Waldgarten; performances and discussions at the Theater Zukunft or art exhibitions in the Bildersaal.
Overwhelmed? Opt for a simple chill sesh in the biergarten, made all the more appealing by Zukunft’s latest addition, an on-site micro brewery with reasonably priced house beer (€2/2.80) in schwarz or goldene varieties – we’re partial to the former, which isn’t as bitter as it looks.
With its backyard feeling and cerebral programme, Zukunft isn’t a destination for hardcore partying or even energised pre-gaming before heading over to About blank next door. Rather, it’s best for weekend relaxation and weekday hangouts you won’t have to sacrifice your next day of work for.
