A German Kuchen is a sturdy fellow. Territorial on the plate and with four feet of whipped cream as an accomplice, it has a stentorian presence that bullies you into the first bite. Thank goodness for the recent opening of Werkstatt der Süße! Aptly located on the prettiest street in Prenzlauer Berg, it produces the most exquisite, sexy French patisserie; individual handmade tarts and mousses so beautiful and delicate, deciding between them is torture.
Head pâtissier Guido Fuhrmann worked for top restaurants in Berlin for years (including the Ritz Carlton) before opening his own spot. The café has a glass wall where you can watch the chefs at work. The cakes change seasonally, but expect to find treats such as a white chocolate and blood orange mousse, a pear and pecan tart and an exceptional espresso chocolate mousse! As well as individual cakes, there are larger ones to share and Guido offers a bespoke service for weddings or birthdays. The prices are a real coup - between €2.50 and €2.90, these scrumptious individual pieces of art are much cheaper than your usual upmarket patisserie.
