Midsummer Nights

Summer cinema is best enjoyed al fresco. Try some of the tastiest offerings from Berlin's 2013 Freiluftkino buffet – watch Berlin angels in a grassy Kreuzberg garden or sweet transvestites in a forest clearing.

The Place Beyond the Pines

Two more months of (hopefully) balmy summer evenings need filling – if you crave both the pictures and picnics, why not have your cake and eat it outside at one of the summer’s half-dozen open air cinemas?

Our media partners at Freiluftkino Kreuzberg dish up rich pickings this year. If it’s Berlin itself that takes your fancy, try it in monochrome – flutter down to Wim Wenders’ iconic love letter Wings of Desire (Jul 11, 21:30) or see why day-in-the-life character study Oh Boy (Jul 12, 21:30) has been making such waves around the city. Crossing the Atlantic, fast cars and fast living take the front seat in hedonistic, day-glo crime spree flick Spring Breakers (Aug 7, 21:15) and stylish heist thriller The Place Beyond the Pines (Aug 24, 20:30).

For those looking for a more classic slice of Americana, the archivists at Freiluftkino Mitte will show Woody Allen’s NY classic Husbands and Wives (Jul 8, 21:30). Freiluftkino Friedrichshain will also be screening some choice cuts, with Chaplin’s Great Dictator (Jul 14, 21:30) and Lang’s futurist wonder Metropolis (Aug 14, 20:30) both on show. Yorck’s summer screen at Potsdamer Platz presents a rather more unhinged take on history with arch, swaggering shoot-em-up Django Unchained (Jul 19, 22:00).

Freiluftkino Hasenheide’s offerings will put a little more chill in your summer swelter with sumptuous, snowy drama Anna Karenina (Jul 30, 21:15) and icy, cerebral spy thriller Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (July 31, 21:15).

Back at Freiluftkino Friedrichshain, make sure you’ve brought a comfortable cushion for Bond’s pacy but lengthy latest outing Skyfall (Aug 9, 21:00) and Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master, a dream-paced examination of a cult leader (Aug 19, 20:30).

Rounding off the summer, the fishnets and feather boas fly as The Rocky Horror Picture show (Aug 31, 19:30) screens under the idyllic trees of Volkspark Rehberge.
