Later this year, Berlin will see the full opening of Fotografiska Berlin, the exciting photography museum set to open in the grounds of what was once the cultural institution Tacheles. But Berliners get a taste of what to expect on March 23-25 at a special three-day event of Fotografiska Days: Cultural Fabric.

Subtitled Rereading the Relationship Between Fashion and Art Practices the show will turn a critical eye on the relationship between art and fashion with a series of panel discussions and workshops based structured around an exhibition, as well as an evening programme of film screenings, a party and a voguing ball.

“We want to critically reflect on contemporary visual culture, and the relationship between the worlds of fashion and contemporary art”, says Marina Paulenka, Fotografiska’s Director of Exhibitions. For her, Cultural Days is a platform where people can start to understand the collaboration between artists and brands, and how an entire creative economy can be built on that shared work.

The venue for this year’s Fotografiska Days will not actually take place at Tacheles – which is still undergoing heavy renovation. Instead, they are branching out to Berlin’s Atelier Gardens, an attractive new cultural venue based at the former film studios of the Berlin Union-Film Ateliers (BUFA) just south of Tempelhofer Feld.

So, what should visitors expect?

First of all, it’s going to be thought-provoking. This multidisciplinary event will combine art, music, food and thought. Ukrainian fashion photographer Julie Poly’s mockumentary-style images combine high-glamour with everyday locations, while Jojo Gronostay questions the ongoing colonial structure of the fashion industry. Some of these ideas will be teased out further in a series of panel discussions with titles like “Where Digital Fashion Meets Art” and “Challenging Dominant Fashion and Artistic Practices”.

Isn’t there going to be a party?

There sure is! At 8pm on Saturday 25, things will start to loosen up with a Voguing Ball organised by the “So Extra” collective. Following that, the Fotografiska x Emop Party will see the likes of Bambii, Lawrence Lee, River Moon and Venetta hit the decks, bringing three days of critical thinking to a fittingly exciting close.
