The tremendous success of Gallery Weekend has prompted a number of cities around the world to copy its template and there’s now one in London, Beijing, Warsaw and even LA. Of course, nothing beats the original edition which remains the undisputed highlight of the Berlin art scene.
This year, 50 of Berlin’s most high profile galleries will once again wheel out their most exciting (read “bankable”) artist as Berlin, still without a major art fair, becomes – for a short time at least – the focus of international attention.
It’s best to visit galleries in clusters and on Thursday night (April 28th), where the majority of openings take place, check out Galerie Buchholz in Charlottenburg, showing the young American painter Samuel Hindolo. Down the road pop in to see CFA and Société as well.
On Friday night (April 29th), ChertLüdde in Schöneberg has given the primetime slot to the Italian-Tunisian artist, Monia Ben Hamouda, who will be showing a new series of works made from laser cut steel and spices.
Monia Ben Hamouda, Denial of a Redwing Blackbird (Aniconism as Figuration Urgency), 2022; Ben Hamouda / Michele Gabriele, Remarkably Clear, Almost Invisible, installation view at ASHES/ASHES, New York, 2022; Photo by New Document, Courtesy of ASHES/ASHES, New York and Monia Ben Hamouda, Milan and ChertLüdde, Berlin
From there, join the large smattering of galleries around Potsdamer Strasse including Bortolozzi, Klosterfelde Edition and Heidi who will be showing the exciting young Brooklyn-based artist Jordan Strafer who works primarily in video.
