Algae are often mentioned as the food of the future, but could you effectively use it in a creative context as well? That’s the question posed by designers Essi Johanna Glomb and Rasa Weber with the project ‘Algaemy’. The analogue printer (pictured) eschews harsh chemicals in favour of nature’s own colours, using different types of red, blue, green and brown microalgae to produce a surprisingly wide palette of colours.

Are you on the lookout for textiles with algae prints? Do your synapses explode at the sight of minimalist marble tables, bronze candlesticks or clear acrylic plastic lamps? Or would you perhaps just like to see what the design talents of tomorrow are up to?

If these questions even occur to you, then missing out on DMY International Design Festival is not an option. Starting yesterday (May 28) and running through June 1, the festival offers Berliners a chance to see the work of more than 500 designers from all over the world, spread out across 12,000 sqm of Tempelhof hangar space.

Check out our photographic survey of the designs of the future above.

Also scheduled during the run of the festival are back-to-back open talks on topics ranging from sustainability in glass production to how to shape the green revolution through design.
