Seymour Gris: Berlin – cheap? Dream on.

Call me an aging whingebag scrooge, but things were a lot better, i.e. cheaper, when I moved to Berlin 10 years years ago. Back in the days when food in Mitte was not necessary edible but at least affordable…

€5 for four dumplings! is just the latest example of “rip-off Mitte”. Here’s another. The other day I was hobnobbing with indulgent, good-looking thirty- and forty-somethings in the Neue Odessa Bar in Torstraße. I paid FOUR EUROS for a small bottle of disgusting Polish beer. Back in the day, the Odessa Bar was a small, Bohemian wine bar with CHEAP WINE and interesting company in intimate surroundings.

You say: “Shut up you loser, go to Neukölln.” The cheap stuff’s there now!

But not for long. This weekend, I attended the Nowkölln Flowmarkt on Maybachufer. As I wandered the back streets of NorNeuKo (Northern Neukölln), I stumbled into a waffle/ice cream parlour packed with bourgeois-bohemians buying FOUR EURO waffles with nothing on them! Or approximately 30 percent more expensive than the equivalent at that original hipster waffle joint in Prenzlauer Berg, Kauf Mich Glücklich…

Anyway, I can’t afford to get to Neukölln – and now they’re raising the prices of public transport again….

Did I mention that Germany has insanely expensive healthcare?

But here’s some cheap, creepy fun (thank you Spreeblick).

Please post your Berlin rip-offs and whinge with me.
