Deputy Editor: Exberliner Magazine

Want to work for Exberliner? We're looking for a new hire....

The magazine:

Founded in 2002 by three journalists, Exberliner is Germany’s largest independent English-language magazine. Based in and focused on Berlin, it covers culture, nightlife and politics with a monthly print edition, a website and editorial newsletters. Since 2021, EXB has been part of the tipBerlin publishing group, who we share an office with at Müllerstraße 12 in Wedding.

The position:

Copy/Deputy editor (staff position, 40h/week)

The person holding this position is responsible for overseeing the monthly print magazine production process in collaboration with writers and editors and under the direction of the editor-in-chief, as well as maintaining Exberliner‘s editorial standards and voice across all platforms. This is an in-office position which requires daily teamwork. Start date: from September 2022.

Specific duties include:

  • Copy-editing and packaging print and online articles according to house style (line editing; rewriting or restructuring as needed; creating headlines, subheads and tags)
  • Overseeing story progress and edits; enforcing deadlines for freelancers, section editors and columnists
  • Heading up print magazine proofreading/fact-checking and implementing final text changes with the art director/graphic designer
  • Scheduling and overseeing team meetings, planning upcoming topics, and implementing processes
  • Writing stories and/or overseeing print collaborative work
  • Administrative duties as required

Requirements:

  • Airtight command of English-language spelling, grammar and sentence structure – only native speakers (or those at a native-speaker level) will be considered
  • At least two years’ journalism or editorial experience (print preferred)
  • Excellent communication and managerial skills: you’ll have to work within a team and handle a pool of freelancers
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines under pressure
  • Fanatic attention to detail; excellent communication skills
  • Familiarity with Exberliner‘s print and online editions and its editorial concept

Preference will be given to applicants who have:

  • lived in Berlin for at least a year, and developed an overview of the city’s political and cultural landscape beyond the “expat bubble”
  • a journalism degree
  • decent command of German (level B1 or higher)
  • previous experience with flatplans, content mangement systems, and editorial software
  • an aversion to PR-speak, blogspeak, and unnecessary gerunds
  • the urge to remove the serial comma in the above sentence
