It’s a satchel of the sepulchral, the better to bag the ladies at this month’s Exberliner Wednesdays at Kaffee Burger with a couple of postpunk problem-solvers to turn the darkness into ink.
First up, the devilishly dyslexic Portrait of the Young Man as an Artist, whose textured, melancholic math-rock swoons and blooms, adding a dollop of “Yes, I will. Yes” to the genre’s “I’d prefer not to.”
And then, heavy and metallic, but mostly free of leather, Argentinean transplants Mueran Humanos (photo) bombard the senses with a danceable albeit insistent blackness – though that may also be an effect of Kaffee Burger’s impressive selection of vodka.
After, until morn, as the muck mires upward and hardens into clay, the sunlight of DJ Shiner slips through the cracks, spinning the utterly familiar for the deeply bewildered.
