Our favourite foodie bad boys Ramsés and Jules have banded together with their female counterpart Mariel and newcomer Kenno to create an older sister/dangerous nemesis to Prenzlauer Berg’s Maria Bonita: Maria Peligro – in Kreuzberg, of course. (Peligro means “danger”, in contrast to bonita’s “goodness”.)

Since its opening in January, Ramsés’ Mexican Imbiss has been all grown up (well, kind of), in its sparse but funky new digs a sombrero’s throw away from the U1. The bright walls, metallic ceilings and light fixtures made from stainless steel kitchen tools make for a cheerful, cosy eating experience. And Maria Peligro’s simple, filling, fresh and moderately spicy traditional Mexican cooking – not to mention its extensive tequila selection, with over a dozen varieties to choose from, as well as Mexican beer and a full bar – is the perfect antidote to the grimmest weather.

The food is made with care: the corn tortillas are homemade, and the mole sauce prepared from scratch. In short, a visit to Maria Peligro is always a fiesta. We can’t wait until spring comes, and they open the outdoor terrace.

Maria Peligro currently seats 30 – although there are more places to come – and opens daily at midday. Starters range from €2.50 to €4 and main dishes from €6 to €7.50; desserts cost €2.50. Imported Mexican beers cost between €2 to €3.50. There are daily happy hours from 18-19 and 23-24, as well as DJs on select nights. There’s a big party planned for the opening game of the World Cup – South Africa vs. Mexico – on June 11, so mark it on your calendar!
