It is ridiculously easy to over-do the mid-week socialising and right now I feel like I could be in the third dimension of an Inception (Sun, Sept 5 @ Freiluftkino Insel am Cassiopeia; bring a jumper!) dream as another weekend klings my bell. So let’s start with the less strenuous goings-on in Berlin… and by less strenuous I mean the kind of event that will have you home before your local Bäckerei reopens… Can anyone tell me what the deal is with them opening at 5am?!
MISS READ (Fri, Sept 3-Sun, Sept 5 @ Kunst-Werke) takes over the KW this weekend as independent/arts publications of all sorts descend from many corners of the globe ahead of this year’s Litfest (Sept 15-25). Many of these will be pretty, interesting and at the cutting edge of book publishing, but I’m more interested in hearing about how they’re created. There’s a lovely little programme of free lectures and performances running alongside the exhibition – one to mark in your diary is a talk with publisher Brett Bloom (of Half Letter Press / Temporary Services; Sat, Sept 4 @ 2pm) about his experiences in the industry.
There are some seriously varied ways to spend Friday evening – love them or loathe them. Another form of nostalgic 1990s tunage (Fri, Sept 3 @ Tape Club), a chance to hear über experimental musician Arto Lindsay (Fri, Sept 3 @ West Germany) and a party to celebrate Man Recordings‘ fifth birthday (Fri, Sept 3 @ Brunnenstraße 64/65) are all on the cards.
If you didn’t get your fashion fix at Berlin Fashion Week way back when in July, then head along to the opening of »FACE/project« by Tina Berning and Michelangelo di Battista (photo; Sat, Sept 4 @ Camera Work). It’s an homage to illustrator Berning and photographer di Battista’s intriguing multimedia collaborations (as much art as fashion, really, even if some of them do involve Claudia Schiffer).
I have a few friends who are very excited about Saturday night. Analogue-turned-digital musician, DJ and remix-König Boris Brejcha (Sat, Sept 4 @ Cassiopeia) leads the field in high-tech minimalism – and now he’s finally playing in Berlin. Elsewhere, Kasper Bjorke (Sat, Sept 4 @ Horst Krzbrg), who is responsible for heading up some kind of techno pop trend in Denmark, helps Herr Süss and Herr Sauer celebrate five years of their club night.
Just as Süss & Sauer perfectly complement each other, so do wine and art. The Association of German Quality and Prädikat Wine Estates’ centennial celebration (Sun, Sept 5 @ Alte Nationalgalerie) merges the two, with 195 wines spread across Berlin in a part-wine tasting, part-vernissage extravaganza at 70 different art galleries. There will even be buses, Lang Nach der Museen-style, to shuttle people to the various locations. How very darling indeed… but beware that it will set you back €27!
