According to police and a spokesperson from the fire department, the blaze appears to have been started when a 48-year-old man set fire to two beds on the hospital’s second floor. The man also tried to set a trash can alight in the foyer, but was stopped by firefighter in time. Three patients and one nurse were rushed to Friedrichshain Hospital where they are being treated for smoke inhalation.
An alarm was received by the fire department at 12:33am on Monday morning, when heavy spoke was already spreading across the hospital’s eight floors. Forty people, including patients and staff, had to be evacuated in the building, according to rbb.
It’s still unclear whether the suspect was a patient of the hospital, a member of staff, or a private individual.
