Express Metropolis Berlin: Internal documents reveal new BVG transport plan
The BVG have a master plan. Berlin’s U-Bahn network currently consists of 147 kilometres of track, but new internal documents from the BVG have revealed an ambitious proposal to more than double that number to 318 kilometres. This would expand every single U-Bahn line and even create an entirely new track – the U0 – to serve as an outer ring directly connecting the suburbs.

A mammoth project which would cost the city billions of euros, the scheme represents a long-term vision for the BVG 2050+, although exact costs and timescales are not mentioned.
The name for this bold new vision is “Express Metropolis Berlin” and it’s believed to draw inspiration from similar development projects in Paris. Subway expansion is a topic of the ongoing negotiations between the SPD and CDU who are aiming to form Berlin’s new governing coalition, with both parties committed to further expanding the transportation network.
