Hostage situation in Schöneberg ends as police raid antique shop

An antiques shop on Keithstrasse in Schöneberg was the scene of a dramatic and bloody incident yesterday evening. At around 17:30 on Monday evening, police received the first emergency calls about a raid on an antique shop near Wittenbergplatz.

The two hostages – a man and a woman – both escaped with their lives.

The alleged perpetrator had taken two hostages leading the police to cordon off a large area between Kurfürstenstrasse, Kleiststrasse and Keithstrasse, and bring in their special tactical unit, the SEK. Local residents were not allowed into their apartments but instead allowed into a nearby hotel and provided with free drinks.

The two hostages – a man and a woman – both escaped with their lives. The woman was able to escape first, but the male hostage remained with the perpetrator until the police raided the premises at 2:30 on Tuesday morning. The main suspect killed himself before he was detained.

Another man, also armed, was arrested earlier in the evening – but it is still being determined whether or not he was an accomplice of the hostage taker.
