On Monday, there were 219 new Covid-19 infections reported in Berlin. The seven-day incidence currently stands at 66.5 cases per 100,000 people.
Last Generation activists deface monument to German constitution with oil-like substance
In a video published by the activist group on Twitter, members wearing high-visibility jackets approach the monument carrying large buckets filled with a black, slimy substance which they proceed to throw over a number of the building’s glass panels. The target of their attack was the sculpture at Jakob Kaiser House called “Grundgesetz 49”, inscribed with the articles of the German constitution.
Article 20 states the duty of the state to protect “the natural basis of life and animals”
In the message they shared alongside the video, activists wrote the message: “Burn oil or protect fundamental rights?” – and many held placards referencing Article 20, which states the duty of the state to protect “the natural basis of life and animals” and bear a “responsibility for future generations”. Last Generation see the continued reliance of fossil fuels as incompatible with these fundamental rights.
German politicians have condemned the action – and completely missed the point. Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser (SPD) said there is “no justification for smearing the constitution”, commenting “these people only have chaos on their minds” and called for them to be prosecuted.
