Two girls stabbed during attack on Neukölln school

Much about the attack remains unclear. There is not believed to be any political or religious motive

Police received the call at 15:17 on Wednesday afternoon: a man with a knife had attacked the children in the schoolyard of the Evangelical school on Mainzer Strasse in Neukölln. Two victims were seriously injured and had to be flown by helicopter to hospital with life-threatening injuries. The girls are seven and eight years old, respectively. Right now, neither are believed to be in mortal danger.

Much about the attack remains unclear. There is not believed to be any political or religious motive – and it is also currently still being investigated as to whether the suspect (a 38 year old man who was arrested at the scene) knew the victims. A homicide squad has taken over the investigation.

In the immediate aftermath of the attack, children were shut inside the school building as a precaution. By 18:00, the last of the pupils were led from the school by another exit, where many of their parents were already waiting. Classes have been cancelled at the school for Thursday and Friday.
