On Thursday evening, a large-scale police operation cleared the S-Bahn station at Warschauer Straße and closed part of Warschauer Brücke, as scaffolding from the under-construction Amazon Tower threatened to fall down.

Trains on the S3, S5, S7, S75 and S9 lines continued running in both directions, but were not able to stop at the Warschauer Straße station, and tram and bus services were also affected. Police secured the area for about half an hour, before the hanging scaffolding was safely removed and police gave the all-clear.

Currently under construction, the 35-story high-rise Amazon Tower (officially known as the Edge East Side Tower), is set to be Berlin’s tallest building. The structure has been at the centre of some controversy since the final permit was granted in 2019.

Residents and district politicians have criticised the development, fearing that it will promote gentrification in the Friedrichshain and Kreuzberg districts. The Tower is expected to be completed towards the end of this year.
