Former hotel employees claim the AquaDom had already leaked back in 2018

On 16 December 2022, at approximately 5:45am, the enormous tank of Berlin’s AquaDom aquarium burst, sending more than one million litres of water crashing to the ground and 1,500 sea creatures to their death. Today, the hotel remains closed for renovation, as does the nearby DDR museum which also suffered water damage. But we still didn’t know the cause of the disaster. Now, claims have emerged that the AquaDom may have already been leaking as far back as 2018.
According to a report in the Berliner Zeitung, several former employees of the hotel claim they saw the aquarium leaking during their time there and they’ve got photos to prove it.
Pictures uploaded to Tripadvisor show a giant plastic tarpaulin set out beneath the tank to catch spilling water and former staff insist the hotel isn’t being honest about how long they’ve been aware of the problems. Fabian Hellbusch, a spokesperson from the company who owns the site, confirms that water did spill into the lobby and that repair work was done around October 2019. A reopening ceremony was planned for the summer of 2020, but was cancelled due to the pandemic.
