Elektra vows to avenge her father’s death; she lives, like a beast, on the fringe of the city while plotting how to kill his murderer: her mother, Clytemnestra. And composers have written some beautiful music for her throughout history – Gluck, Strauss, Xenakis. The Neuköllner Oper invites Berlin-based Russian composer and musician Chatschatur Kanajan to piece together these existing scores and libretti to tell Elektra’s story anew. Are we doomed, the production asks, to reject our parents only to become them?
