The massive paintings that shine through the windows of Capitain Petzel emit radiant white, azure blue and magenta from a series of bent paint cans that splash upwards, defying gravity. Downstairs smaller landscapes, abstractions, and fragmented portraits pull you deeper into Skreber’s sparse memory field, where details are fuzzy. In his first Berlin solo, the German artist’s new works are on industrial aluminium honeycomb panels, covered in thick layers of microcrystalline wax. Though they steer clear of the disasters he’s envisioned in the past, they still hover over the dystopian.
